G'day and Welcome to Gum Leaf Pipes
A story of craft, service, and finding purpose again in retirement
Welcome to Gum Leaf Pipes.
Pull up a chair, light your pipe if that’s your pleasure, and settle in. You’ve stepped into a quiet workshop where the scent of timber hangs in the air and the rhythm of hand tools carries echoes of a life once lived in uniform. After 40 years serving Australia — 20 in the Defence Force and 20 as a public servant — I finally found the space to slow down, breathe, and make something with my hands again.
I’m Mark — a veteran who found new purpose in retirement by learning the craft of pipe making. What began as a simple return to the pleasure of smoking a pipe soon grew into a deeper curiosity about how these pieces were made. That curiosity led me to the bench: to timber, grain, and the steady rhythm of shaping something real. These days I craft artisan pipes under the name Gum Leaf Pipes. Each one is a small story of learning craftsmanship and the joy of creating.
I chose the name Gum Leaf Pipes because I wanted something unmistakably Australian — a name that reflected where I live, what I value, and the landscape that’s been part of my life for decades. It also carries a purpose close to my heart: supporting efforts to protect the endangered koala. A portion of future sales will go toward organisations working to preserve this iconic Australian animal, making each pipe a small contribution to something that matters.
Every pipe is made by hand, guided by the grain’s natural character and shaped carefully and deliberately, with attention to detail and respect for both the process and the material. Some pipes are bold, some understated — but all are created to offer more than just a smoke. They’re made to be held, used, and remembered. A moment of connection. A pause. A bit of character in the hand.
This space is about more than pipe‑making. It’s about the things that shaped me: – honest conversations about craft, community, and finding purpose again in retirement – reflections on life after service – stories from Defence about how equipment changed roles and why it mattered – the occasional motorbike adventure
If you enjoy handmade work, good stories, or just a decent yarn, you’re in the right place. Feel free to explore the gallery, browse the bench, or reach out if you’ve got a project in mind.
Welcome to Gum Leaf Pipes — let’s make something meaningful together.
